LMIA

Labor Market Impact Assessment

Normally, if an employer is not able to find a suitable candidate for a job position then that employer can hire a foreign national with required skill set. Prior to this job offer, employer needs to get Labor Market Impact Assessment from ESDC. The intent of LMIA is that every job that is filled by a foreign national result in positive impact on overall labor market.

There are typically a few different types of LMIA, based on employer's requirement one can apply for any of these:

​

High Wage LMIA: If employer offers job wage rate to temporary foreign worker which is at or above provincial/territorial median wage then employer need to apply in stream for high wage position.

​

Low-wage LMIA: If employer offers job wage rate to temporary foreign worker which is lower than median set up province/territory then employer needs to apply via stream for low wage position.

Global Talent Stream: For expedited hiring of temporary foreign workers with high skill, specialized work experience. This stream has very quick processing time (approximately 10 days), there are two categories under which employer can apply for this stream. 

 

Category A: If you are referred to Global Talent Stream by one of global talent stream's designated partner. 

 

Category B: If employer is filling a position of high skill, specialized and the occupation is in-demand list found on global talent occupation list.

LMIA to support permanent residency visa application: Employer who want to hire skilled worker and support their permanent residency application can make a job offer under Express Entry. The skilled person should be eligible in one of the streams to apply under Express Entry - namely, Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Trade Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class,
